About

Stuart Lyle

Owner, Pottery Artist

Stuart Lyle of Muddy Hands Pottery, is a lifelong native of Walhalla, South Carolina.  Living at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, inspired by nature and fueled by a deep passion for clay smithing, Stuart has felt a love in his soul for sculpting since childhood.

As a graduate of Haywood Community College in North Carolina, Stuart has been mastering his craft for over 20 years.  He often uses local clay collected from creeks and streams around the mountains to incorporate into his pieces.  His signature style is to use techniques, glazes and finishes that reflect the natural qualities of the earth.

Function is also a very important part of his work.  As a musician and avid chess player, Stuart has enjoyed creating many one of a kind chess sets and musical instruments out of clay, such as the Udu drum along with traditional didgeridoos.

“Pottery has always been my passion and without it I am lost, as it has become a reflection of who I am as a person.”
